Camp Revolution

A Living History Adventure for Families
July 14-19, 2008

Colonial Family

This summer, you and your family can spend a week in 1777 with the staff of Colonial Chesterfield at Riley's Farm in a re-creation of a summer on the 18th century American frontier. You'll receive everything you need to imagine, and re-live, the past--right down to the clothing of the era.

Don't settle for just visiting the shrines of liberty--live the life of the founders!

The Scenario

Your adventure takes place during the summer of 1777, where you find yourself called for attendance at a town meeting near the banks of the Connecticut River in Chesterfield, New Hampshire.

Colonial TownshipThe news is dire.General John Burgyone of the British Army is leading a massive army of British, Hessian, and Native troops down from Canada, and the town of Chesterfield, like othertowns, is taking stock of its future. Will the British burn your crops and home? Will the American (Continental) forces be able to hold Ft. Ticonderoga and forestall the British advance? There have been ardent Loyalists, even among your own town and kin, who have been mocking the American cause of liberty for some time. Will they aid the enemy, or can they be converted to the cause, even in the face of hardship? Only time will tell.

The Accomodations

Marquis Tent

Each family or traveling group of families will have an 18th century style Marquis tent of appropriate size, complete with rope bunks, (double beds for parents and bunks for kids) straw mattresses, and pillows. Partioning canvas walls can be provided as necessary. Colonial Chesterfield has public restrooms and showers available as well. Although period blankets will be provided, and this is a summer scenario, we do allow, and advise, the use of low temperature sleeping bags.

The Location

Riley's Farm - The Location
Camp Revolution
takes place on Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen, California—approximately ninety minutes from Los Angeles, nine miles north of the I-10 Freeway, on the road to Palm Springs. For over twenty years, Riley’s Farm has been host to millions of students who see, first hand, the American Revolution and Civil War played out right before their eyes. The beautiful 760 acre apple and raspberry farm has also been the site for numerous History Channel productions, as well as Steven Spielberg’s feature film, Aamistad. In the summer, at 5,000 feet above sea level, Oak Glen is usually 10-15 degrees cooler than the valleys below.

The Meals

18th century public house, complete with live music and drama.
We serve period meals with fresh ground wheat bread, homemade apple pie, hot and cold cider, and in portions fit for a country squire. You won't go hungry on this vacation!
