St. Patrick's 2009 II

Well, we finished up the 4th Annual (Near) St. Patrick's Day Ball at the Old Packing Shed, Saturday night, and that leaves me looking for some place where I might celebrate St. Patrick's myself, along with my real Irish friends--the Reillys. (By the way, you can already book for next year, if you're so inclined.)

Borrowing the culture of the Irish for a night still makes me feel a little sheepish, but then I got to thinking about it. The Romans borrowed from the Greeks; the English borrowed from the Romans; Elvis borrowed from African-American gospel, blues, and jazz traditions. And, well, the whole world borrows from the Irish. Certainly the Irish borrowed from the Puritan Renaissance that represents the American experiment. Bring a hard working Irishman to America, where he doesn't have to pay rent to a Feudal landlord, and someday his grandchild will be president of the United States. All cultures borrow from each other, and sometimes they even improve on each other. Years ago, on our honeymoon, Mary and I had dinnner in a little French bistro with a lonesome microphone near the bar. A small little fellow, with slicked down, wavy-black hair stepped up to it--wearing a leather jacket. He began singing "You ain't nothin' but a Hound Dog," with a French accent. I rest my case.

The Corned Beef was so tender, according to the leader of our Celtic musicians, When Pigs Fly, that you could cut it with a fork, and I'm thinking of having the kitchen make our Irish Soda bread a regular staple around here. The vocals, spurred on by Susan Usher's piano, were superb. Logan Creighton, as usual, applied his casual good cheer to the dance instruction, and a new addition, Noelle Drazin, provided the step dancing. Thanks to everyone for making it a great night! Grandma Bea stayed nearly to the end!
