In 1871, Joe E. Wilshire ("Old Joe") purchased hundreds of acres of Oak Glen, California farmland for a saddle, a jug of whiskey, and a chicken.    You and your family, friends, and students might be surprised to know that much of that farm land is still, well…farmland!  In this tour, we explore the crafts and skills of a homestead farm family.    Spend a few hours with us, before the era of traffic jams, learning the simple home arts of 19th century farm life.

Activities: explore the squared log quarters of a 19th century farm family, try your hand at some of their chores (stuff mattresses with corn, beat rugs with a stick, wash clothes in a hand basin).  Ride around the farm in a an antique tractor driven hayride, dip candles for your long winter’s rest, and visit the general mercantile to purchase supplies. (Workshops featured may vary)

Animals were more than just pets to the homesteader. They did work, and also provided food and clothing. Go ahead, step in the pen and say hello to our chickens, goats, lamb, pig, and calf.   Learn about the care and training of typical 19th century farm animals.
